Abstract

Recent years have witnessed an upsurge of interest in the use of virtual learning environments to teach psychology (Waschul, 2001). As yet, however, little is known about the way in which students gain access to and make use of supporting material provided in VLEs for academic courses. Therefore, in an effort to rectify this oversight, the present study evaluated the use of web-based resources (namely overheads and notes available on a virtual learning environment) to augment the teaching of two large-scale (N = 600) first year undergraduate psychology courses in University College Dublin. Information on the students’ use of web-materials for the two courses was compiled over the course of an academic year. In addition, student satisfaction with the courses and with the material provided was assessed using questionnaires. Following a discussion of results, the theoretical and practical implications of this study will be reviewed.
