Abstract

Successfully understanding an organisation’s needs in such a manner that their impact on the IT infrastructure can be analysed and discussed, presents a major challenge. The most significant problem arises in communicating the changes desired in a semantically consistent and understandable manner and then reflecting the potential impact of those changes on the IT infrastructure. This research investigates to what extent a simulation-based communication tool aids in the development of a shared understanding in order to support collaborative decision making to bring about organisational, and associated IT infrastructural, change. The tool employs state-of-the-art technologies that relate to simulation, semantic business process management and controlled natural language. The technologies demonstrate the potential for natural language interfaces to utilize semantic inference to communicate organisational changes, and machine translation to generate a simulated business process comprised of semantically enabled web services that represent the evolution of the organisation’s IT infrastructure.
