Abstract

Recognising the importance of people, companies make a huge effort at the front-end of the employment relationship to "get the best". Interviews, psychometric testing, assessment centres and a host of other "selection tools" are employed - all designed to ensure that a steady stream of talent flows into the organisation.

Yet, however good the front-end efforts in selection, the "new game" is in keeping talent on board. The typical length of service has now dramatically declined. My own father worked for Dublin Corporation for 47 years. One generations later, my longest stint as an employee was six years with General Electric. In the current market, six years is considered very long service in some industries. The "rotating door" syndrome is not confined to the prison population!
