Bastible, Brendan M. (2003) An examination of e-commerce in the airline and hotel industries within the Irish hospitality sector. Diploma thesis, Dublin, National College of Ireland.
It is suggested that the Irish hotel industry was slow to make effective use of Information Technology (I.T.), especially E-commerce. However, up to the present there was little published data on the subject to assess this view. In order to investigate the impact of E-commerce on two specifics segments, the Irish five star hotels and airlines, a 100% survey was attempted. The sample groups were evaluated by way of questionnaire, in personal interviews and by e-mail. The samples selected were the official Bord Failte registered listing of the 20 five star hotels, and Ryanair & Aer Lingus. Of the hotels, nine were in Dublin with the balance situated in historic, scenic or heritage locations. Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus are based in Dublin.
The questionnaire was structured to elicit data primarily on the impact of E-commerce on marketing the airlines and five star hotels. There is a dramatic impact in both segments but the airlines are profiting from E-commerce in a far greater way than the hotels. Ryanair alone is generating 90% of its sales through online transactions compared to a relatively insignificant 10% for hotels.
The overall conclusion is that the technology is available but has yet to be used to its full potential by the five star segment of the Irish Hotel Industry. The key recommendation is that hotels move to initiate an integrated E-commerce Strategy.
