Abstract

The ubiquity of mobile devices and in particular the smart phone has placed a strong emphasis on mobile and location based commerce. However, more than that, mobile has begun to displace the traditional notion of web applications where the web site and desktop browser are central to conducting online commerce.
We have seen a strong shift towards systems that are based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), where loosely coupled components hosted on the cloud, collaborate to provide much of an organisation’s business logic. Furthermore, unlike traditional web applications, these services and systems are entirely presentation layer agnostic. The core concept being that we will deliver a representation of the system on the device of your choice. It is in this spirit that the Airline Mobile Merchandising Platform was developed.
This report presents the Airline Mobile Merchandising Platform, which consists of an application programming interface (API) and configurable Android client application. The Airline Mobile Merchandising platform allows airlines to rapidly establish a mobile presence while providing their on the go customer with easy access to flight and ancillary products from a single application.
The report will outline the motivation and goals behind the development and the benefits it brings to its key stakeholders. Finally it will describe the methodologies and architecture that were used as well as the implementation technologies.
