Abstract

Initially in this project I wanted to address the problem of older people not being online and not using the computers. I knew that there was a demand and by looking at websites such as ageaction.ie and CARDI.ie I felt that I could help with a solution. Research showed that many older people were nervous about using a computer. I began to think about all the situations in which I was nervous, first time I went to college the first day I started work. I realised that the more and more we do something the less frightening we know it and the easier it becomes. I wondered how one could get older people more used to the internet while eliminating the fear and nervousness. I thought of pilots and how they go through countless hours of simulation training to enable them to make cool and calm decisions in real flight situations. With this in mind I decided to build mock up internet situations that would happen in real life. These take place in a completely safe environment.
After the initial prototype was made testing was carried out by four members of the older community. The testing went well and I decided to continue with the project. The interactive lessons were then made using flash and action script. Video lessons were made to discuss other internet topics and videos were also created to go along with the interactive lessons. The material was then put together on a website.
This material was then tested by four members of the older community who all gave it positive reviews. The older people were then asked to answer a serious of questions on how their knowledge was before the course and after the course all showed an improvement after using the course.
