Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to illustrate whether or not the retail sector is ready for the euro and the implications the euro will have on the retail sector in Ireland. The retail sector is a large employer in the Irish economy and it will play a vital role in the acceptance of the euro in Ireland. The author has worked extensively within the sector and he can see that the euro will lead to possible opportunities and challenges that the retailing environment Ireland will face. The author used secondary data in order to obtain a background on the euro and the retail sector and then primary data, through the use of postal questionnaires to obtain the prevailing thinking within the retail sector. The author is very concerned with the results of the questionnaire. The postal questionnaires came to the conclusion that large companies are very well prepared for the possible implications of the euro; however small companies have shown to he very unaware and have not the necessary structures in place in order to cope with the euro. It has become apparent that small retailers are
struggling to come to terms with the euro. The results have raised the possibility that small companies could be left behind when the euro is introduced and lose out to the multiples. This could indeed all be part of the possible erosion of the small corner shop in place of large retailers.
