The introduction of a single currency is one of the most historic events in the history of the European Union. One of the key areas in assessing the impact of Economic and Monetary Union, especially in an Irish context, will be the
manufacturing industry. This is due to the fact that one of our key trading partners, the United Kingdom, will not be among the first wave of participants.
So apart from dealing with the changeover itself, it is necessary for companies to make preparations for any serious fluctuations that may arise between the euro and sterling.
It was important to establish which particular sectors of the manufacturing industry are particularly exposed to sterling. This was made possible by a report commissioned by the Government to assess the implications for Ireland of EMU.
So research questionnaires were sent to companies operating in the various sectors of the manufacturing industry.
The extent of preparations varied, depending on the size of the company, the proportion of the markets and their assessment of their own potential exposure.
It was found that companies were generally informed enough to make these decisions.
The one over-riding point is the belief Irish companies have that the effects of EMU will be even more positive if, and when, the UK decides to join EMU.
