Abstract

This document outlines the approach taken from the requirements elicitation to the development of a modern web application integrated with resourceful tools focussing on cyber bullying. Utilizing multiple programming languages across two Integrated Development Environments (IDE’s), the application seeks to deliver the best solution to a sensitive and complex issue.

Cyber bullying, bullying that happens over digital devices (phones, laptops, games consoles) is a growing problem among users of technology and the internet however primarily with younger users such as teenagers. Discussed within this technical report is CyBly, an interactive web application that provides methods of analysing and visualising cyber bullying.

The application is responsive and accessible, aiming to accommodate mobile and desktop users. The main goal is to improve detection, provide new educational techniques and guide victims to help.

Key features include:
- Text Analysation Tool
Developed in C#, the text analysation tool uses several datasets to analyse text and detect uses of inappropriate language targeted at a person or group.

- Data Visualisation
Data gathered through user questionnaires is used to populate charts from the Google Charts library and are displayed throughout the application.

- Educational Challenges
Presenting facts to the user, a time-based quiz is presented to provoke thought and educate.
