This paper examines the methods used to measure underground economic activity. Chapter 1 considers the driving forces behind the black economy. Chapter 2 considers the methods and measurement techniques in the available literature.
Chapter 3 applies some of these techniques to the Irish economy and compares with other international estimates. Chapter 4 considers the shortcomings of some of these techniques. Chapter 5 examines the effect of the black economy on the official economy and chapter 6 concludes.
