Abstract

The globalisation of the world's economies has resulted in our workplaces changing. More and more foreign nationals are leaving their home countries to work abroad. They face different issues when working and living in a new environment.

One of the main issues is that of cultural diversity. Management also has to cope with the dynamics of employing a multicultural workforce. I hope to discover what cultural and integration problems foreign nationals face when working in a new environment.

Language is also a fundamental element within these multicultural workforces. Foreign language skills are a necessary requirement within the global marketplace.
I will discuss the significance of language within the EU and within the context of business communication.

I will conduct a survey of foreign nationals within a large multinational to discover:
1. The motivation behind their decision to work abroad.
2. Whether cultural problems presented themselves.
3. The language skills of foreign nationals working in Ireland.
