PCHP is an innovative, home based literacy and parenting programme that strengthens families and prepares children to succeed academically. This paper aims to provide an overview of the development of PCHP in Ireland from its initial introduction to 15 families in the Dublin Docklands in 2007, to over 150 families in 2016. PCHP runs over a two year period with Home Visitors visiting the child and their parent/ guardian in the home environment twice weekly bringing age appropriate books and toys while modelling oral language, reading and play. Through PCHP parents are supported, in enhancing the home learning environment, allowing for the development of the language, literacy and numeracy skills needed to be successful in school. This paper will explore the development of PCHP in Ireland in terms of its delivery, reach and outcomes for children, their parents and Home Visitors. The findings will outline the success of the programme’s continued expansion in reaching families in need across communities. Evidence of the positive outcomes of the programme for children, parents, families and Home Visitors will be presented. Findings from a recent longitudinal study completed by ELI will be explored which provided positive indications of the long-term benefits of PCHP on the home learning environment. Overall the findings of the current paper provide some insight into how an early intervention parental support programme can be successfully rolled out to enhance the home learning environment, resulting in improved outcomes for children living in disadvantaged communities.
