This paper provides and insight into the current challenges being experienced in the retail sector, how business intelligence and data analytics can identify key business issues and provide actionable and implementable business insights.
The retailer sought to gain insight into store performance, the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, to gain a deeper understanding of the customer base along with the customers purchasing behaviour. This paper also details the design of a retail analytics solution based on SQL Server, R Studio and Tableau along with the insights it uncovered from the retailers POS (point of sales systems) and social media (Twitter). Two approaches were taken to conducting the analysis, a hypothesis based approach and a data driven approach which yielded interesting insights on both fronts. The outputs of the analysis revealed areas in which the retailer will need to provide more focus to retain customers and grow their business along with area’s of potential opportunity.
