The intention of this project is examine data attained from (Statistical Computing Statistical Graphics, 2009) on airline flights. The data is based on domestic passenger flights within the United States of America between US airports. A system has been generated around this data to allow insights and knowledge to be gained from the downloaded data.

The types of insights that have been addressed in this system are, airport and airline performance and league tables of airlines to see how they perform from month to month. This has been achieved using several methods within a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) dashboard and using an OnLine Analytical Processing OLAP reporting tool.

The results should allow the user of the dashboard and reports to see if certain airlines or airports perform better than others and perhaps allow the user to choose wisely between alternatives based in the knowledge gained. This knowledge could also prove useful to airlines and airports for improve their business by highlighting flight delay information.

This project has involved around building a reporting system using a SQL Server database to host the data and the IBM Cognos reporting toolset. This was used to build the reports and KPI Dashboards used for analysis and the gaining of insights behind the data.

In the building of the proposed system many issues were faced and resolved in order to arrive at the final system and the suite of reports initially proposed. Minor changes have been made since the initial proposal, but the system and suite of reports built are not at a loss in the reduction of some of the original requirements proposed.
