Traditionally, organisational goals have been production oriented. Today however, the growing emphasis on Human Resource Management often finds personnel oriented goals competing head-on with manufacturing and marketing goals for management's attention. Absenteeism has for many years been one of the most intractable problems facing Irish Industry and its organizations. Irelands current Socio economic situation continues to change at a rapid pace, this in turn effects organisations, because of the unpredictable nature of workplace absenteeism. Absenteeism in the workplace has a negative effect on the National Economy as a result of a loss of potential output (lost productivity, inferior quality, etc), attributable to the reduction in available labour force, which in turn reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of services provided to our customers, both in the private and public sector.
